Civic and Cultural Outreach

As a major force in the revitalization of Chicago's South Loop area and home to a range of outreach efforts, Columbia College Chicago has an incalculable impact on the city and its people.

Much of the impact is a direct result of educating the authors of our emerging culture - the students who will shape the arts and media of our time and the future. But much of our impact is due to activities designed to touch the public in creative, constructive, and important ways.

These efforts include:
AP* Summer Institute for the Arts
Columbia College Chicago's AP* Summer Institute for the Arts provides professional development for high school art and music teachers who teach, or are interested in teaching, AP* courses.  Join teachers from all across the country for this week-long training that includes artist lectures, studio work, and takes advantage of the numerous cultural sites of Chicago.

Center for Community Arts Partnerships
Students at Columbia are encouraged to go beyond the ivory tower of academia and see the classroom are including the "real world" of the city and the diverse communities it comprises. CCAP creates and nurtures reciprocal arts partnerships connecting college and community. Through CCAP community partnership activities like Urban Missions and Arts in Youth and Community Development, hundreds of young people from Chicago communities have gained an awareness of the college and the skills necessary for pursuing higher education.

Community Media Workshop
The Community Media Workshop supports the broad public discussion necessary for a healthy democracy. Among its programs: training programs for non-profits in effective communication strategies and news tips for media and others.

International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago
The International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago is a nonprofit organization committed to promoting Latino culture and fostering understanding between Latinos and other Americans. Columbia College partners with the center to produce various cultural events, including comedy, dance, music, poetry, theater, and visual arts exhibitions.

Sherwood Community Music School
Sherwood Community Music School is an urban center for comprehensive community music education.  A member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, Sherwood trains gifted young musicians who anticipate careers in music, beginning and amateur musicians of all ages, preschool children and parents, and professional musicians and music educators seeking continuing education.

Summer Arts Camp
The Summer Arts Camp is an introductory arts program for children entering grades 3 through 9. Previous art experience is not required. The projects are created to be easy enough for beginners but challenging enough for more experienced artists. All activities culminate in an end-of-session gallery show, film screening and stage performance for friends and family.

Upward Bound Program
Serving high school students from two Chicago high schools - Foreman and Benito Juarez - Upward Bound assists students in making the transition from high school to a college.
