Richard P. Kiphart, Chair

Richard P. KiphartRichard P. Kiphart is head of William Blair & Company's Private Client Advisors, and a member of the firm's executive committee, joined the firm in 1969. Kiphart became part of Corporate Finance in 1980 and was head of the business from 1995-2009. Prior to 1980, Kiphart was head of equity trading for eight years after his initial role in institutional sales.

A junior officer in the U.S. Navy, Kiphart received his B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1963 and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1965. Kiphart is chairman of Nature Vision, Ranir, and Lime Energy.

He is also president of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and chairman of Erikson Institute, and serves on the board of Children’s Memorial Hospital.

Chester T. Kamin, Vice Chair

Chester T. KaminChester Kamin is retired counsel at the Chicago-based law firm of Jenner & Block LLP, where for forty-five years he had a business trial practice. He acted as lead counsel in many significant trials and appeals, including the landmark antitrust case of MCI Communications Corp. v. American Telephone & Telegraph Company, which resulted in a substantial jury verdict and led to the break-up of AT&T.

Kamin has been active in public service, serving as Special Counsel to the Governor of Illinois and Commissioner of the Illinois Law Enforcement Commission. He has held leadership positions in bar associations at the national, state and local levels and has been recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He served as Adjunct Professor at the University of Chicago Law School in the fields of antitrust and telecommunications and as a member of the Law School’s Visiting Committee. He has written numerous articles and lectured in a variety of continuing legal educational programs.

Kamin currently serves on the Lyric Opera Guild Board and the board of Lyric's Ryan Opera Center. He was board chair of Sherwood Conservatory of Music before its merger into Columbia College Chicago. His cultural and avocational interests include music, drama and the visual arts, figure skating, Pilates, and hiking.

Kamin holds an A.B. magna cum laude from Harvard College and a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School, where he was a contributor to the Law Review.

Sylvia Neil, Vice Chair

Sylvia NeilSylvia Neil is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago Law School. She founded and chairs the Project on Gender, Culture, Religion and Law at Brandeis University and co-edits its book series (Brandeis University Press).

Neil currently sits on the boards of the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (Vice Chair), Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Chicago High School for the Arts, and is president-elect of the Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She also serves on the Visiting Committee for the Humanities at the University of Chicago, the national advisory committees of Human Rights Watch Women’s Rights Division, WomenOnCall and the national board of NARAL.  In 2013 she received the Rabbi Robert J. Marx Social Justice Award from the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs.

Neil began her career as a poverty law litigator at Legal Assistance Foundation. For many years she was the legal counsel and executive director of the American Jewish Congress for the Midwest region where she focused on developing programs to positively impact religious liberty, civil rights, women’s rights and peace in the Middle East. She litigated and appeared amicus curiae in numerous cases, authored legislative enactments and testified before several legislative bodies on these issues. She was appointed to both the Illinois and Cook County Human Rights Commissions. Neil has been a consultant to not for profit organizations and civic institutions and created the prototype Jewish Women’s Foundation for the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago. She was an adjunct professor at Northwestern University School of Law for several years and has taught courses at several institutions on religious liberty, gender, jurisprudence and legal writing.  She also served as associate dean for external affairs and strategic planning at the University of Chicago Law School.

Neil has an AB with High Distinction from the University of Michigan, a JD cum laude from Northwestern University School of Law and recently completed an MA in Jewish Studies from the University of Chicago. 

Sharon Dalenberg, Secretary

Sharon DalenbergFrom her start as a newspaper delivery girl with a paper route, to launching a courier business in downtown Chicago, Sharon has grown her business endeavors into CTL Global, Inc., a leading logistics, transportation and technology solutions provider. As President, CEO and Owner of CTL Global, she lends more than 35 years of expertise and leadership to the day-to-day operations of the business. Her extensive management credentials are corroborated by her spirited entrepreneurial ventures, and she currently chairs a group of corporations led by CTL Global. 

Dalenberg is a member of key industry and professional associations including the American Bar Association and the Illinois Chamber of Commerce. She is also active in logistics and transportation industry associations, including the Messenger Courier Association of America, Express Carriers Association, National Association for Retail Marketing Services, and the Brand Activation Association (formerly Promotional Marketing Association). She has served as a member of the Board of Directors for TCF Bank, Standard Federal Bank for Savings, D & N Bank of Michigan, and Chairman of the Board for Northern Illinois Business Association, Red Crown Marketing Company (formerly a division of Amoco). She currently sits on the Board of Republic Bank, and About, Inc., and is a trustee of Elmhurst College. 

Dalenberg has published articles on management, employment law and sexual harassment, and performs executive coaching to top teams of major corporations, specializing in business development, liability strategies, and mentoring programs. Her client list included: Amoco, BP, Masterlock, ACCO World, American Library Association, Fairmont Hotel Corporation, Motorola, Liberty Bank, TCF, and numerous other companies.

Dalenberg received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Purdue University and her Juris Doctorate from DePaul University.

Barry Sabloff, Treasurer

Barry SabloffBarry Sabloff is a retired banker who currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Marquette National Corporation and it subsidiary, Marquette Bank, in Chicago; as a director and Chairman of the Audit Committee of CoBank ACB in Denver; and as a director of Calypso Technology, Inc. in San Francisco.

Sabloff began his career in banking at The First National Bank of Chicago after serving three years as an officer in the United States Navy. He continued with the bank through a number of mergers through which it became First Chicago NBD then Bank One and since his retirement has become part of JP Morgan Chase. When he retired he was Executive Vice President and Head of the International Group at Bank One where he was responsible for all of Bank One’s non-U.S. customers, the international branch network, global foreign exchange, international treasury, and trade finance products. During his 30 year career with First Chicago and Bank One, Sabloff held a number of other leadership roles heading groups such as Syndications and Private Placements; Europe, Middle East, and Africa; and Global Risk Management. For most of his career he worked in Chicago although he did live in London for four years when he was the area manager for Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

Sabloff was Chairman of the board of trustees of Sherwood Conservatory of Music and joined the board of Columbia College Chicago on the occasion of the merger of Sherwood into Columbia in 2007. Additionally he serves as a director of The American School in London Foundation and as a director of Marquette Bank Education Foundation and the Marquette Affordable Housing Foundation. His past non-profit affiliations have included serving as a director or trustee of The Feltre School (Chicago), The Mid- America Committee for International Business, The American School in London Trust, Ltd., Inroads Inc., Inroads/Chicago, Inc., and the Illinois Cancer Center.

Sabloff graduated cum laude with a BA in Economics from Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut, and holds an MBA in Finance and International Business from the University of Chicago, Graduate School of Business.


Andrew Alexander

Andrew Alexander is the chief executive officer/owner of The Second City Inc. Alexander spent most of his childhood in Brampton, Ontario after emigrating from London, England. He spent a year at Tri-State College in Indiana and completed his formal education at Ryerson Polytechnic in Toronto, Ontario.

Alexander s introduction to show business came in 1971 when he was head of marketing for the John Lennon Peace Festival in Toronto. In 1971, he co-produced the iconic Canadian revue Spring Thaw. In 1973, he became the owner/producer of The Second City in Toronto. His first television project was the multiple Emmy award winning comedy series SCTV. Alexander has developed and produced television programming for ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX Television, Comedy Central, HBO, Showtime, A&E, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

In 1985, its founder and owner, Bernard Sahlins, offered Alexander the opportunity to purchase The Second City Chicago. Alexander and his business partner Leonard Stuart became the sole owners. Since then, Alexander has led and expanded The Second City into a thriving 43 million dollar year business, encompassing the largest Training Center for Improvisation in the world and a highly active film and television division in both Canada and the US.

Alexander has received numerous including the Canadian Comedy Awards "Chairman Award", Gilda's Club Magic Award, The League of Chicago Theaters 2009 Artistic Leadership Award, and named Chicagoan of the Year by the Chicago Tribune. He has accepted on behalf of The Second City the Lifetime Achievement Award from Just For Laughs, The Spirit of Innovation Award, The NAB Spirit of Broadcasting Award 2012, and the Big Shoulders Award 2012 from the Chicago Film Critics. Since acquiring The Second City in 1985, the company under Alexander's leadership has collected 152 Jeff Award Nominations and 30 Jeff Award wins.

Alexander was a founding shareholder of the Pay Television service Super Channel and also served on the Board of Directors. He has also served on the Boards of the League of Chicago Theaters, Canada's Walk of Fame, and Gilda's Club Toronto and Chicago.

Madeleine Moore Burrell

Madeleine Moore Burrell is the retired founder and president of Moore Creative, a New York marketing firm, which launched identity and communications campaigns for major New York hospitals, national organizations and corporations for over 30 years.

An expert in multi-cultural marketing, Burrell headed the first African-American marketing firm awarded a post-apartheid contract with South Africa, launching the Sister City agreement between New York City and Johannesburg. Her clients have included Anheuser Busch, the Apollo Theater in New York, the National Urban League, New Dawn Magazine, the Sunday supplement to The Afro-American Newspaper, The Association of Junior Leagues International, and the annual Essence Awards and Music Fest in New Orleans, where she also spearheaded the licensing of Essence products with national merchandising and advertising campaigns.

With a first career that spanned over ten years as an industrial designer for henry Dreyfuss Associates, Burrell designed products ranging from John Deere tractors to American Airlines interiors. She designed snowmobiles for AMF; pay phones for Bell Atlantic; industrial cameras for Polaroid; sewing machines for Singer and the first plastic hanger in the U.S.

Burrell has served as New York State President of AARP, board member of the AARP Foundation and a Trustee of the Central Park Conservancy. She is Vice Chair of the Brainwashed Resolution Project: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority. She is married to advertising legend and author Tom Burrell.

Lester Coney

Lester Coney joined Mesirow Financial in 2006 as Executive Vice President in the Office of the Chairman. He is responsible for originating and nurturing new business opportunities as well as expanding and maintaining client relationships across all lines of business including investment management, investment services, insurance, investment banking, consulting and real estate. Coney is committed to keeping Mesirow connected to ethnic, minority, and community organizations by providing corporate support for key initiatives and events.

Prior to joining Mesirow Financial, Coney worked in management roles at Aon Corporation, United Healthcare and Traveler's Insurance,

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mr. Coney holds a Bachelor's degree from George Williams University. Taught to appreciate culture while growing up, Mr. Coney developed a fondness for the arts, specifically live theater and museums. That background has manifested itself into his numerous seats on boards of charitable and civic organizations. He is the founding chairman of the Congo Square Theatre's board, a former trustee of Lincoln University, and a past chairman of both the Goodman Theater and City Year Chicago. He is also a member of the advisory committee for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the national deputy finance chair for the Democratic National Committee, a member of the HR Governance Council for Purdue University. Additionally, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation, Art Institute of Chicago, Wades World Foundation, and the Vitality Group.

Mr. Coney's countless honors include the 2007 Executive Leader Award from AFP Chicago, the 2007 King Legacy Award from the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago, Leadership in the Arts Award from the Arts & Business Council of Chicago in 2006, the Community Service Award by the 100 Black Men in 2005 and Crain's Chicago Business' Top 50 Minorities in Business in 2004. Chicago United's 2003 Business Leaders of Color recognized Mr. Coney as one of Chicago's top minority executives. In 2000 he was a delegate for the Governor of Illinois Trade Mission to South Africa. Other honors include recognition from N'Digo N'Fluentials and the Keeper of the Dream Award in 2001. In 2002 he was recognized with the Human Resources Development Institute's Seeds of Africa Award and the same year was chosen as Chicago United's first ever Member of the Month.

Luis De La Parra (BA ’95)

Senior Vice President, Innovation Marketing Team – Univision Communications, Inc.

Luis De La Parra is a Univision marketing veteran since 1995 and currently is the SVP of the Innovation Marketing Team focused on developing multi-platform, integrated marketing programs. De La Parra’s previous roles at Univision have included management of all operational aspects of on-air promotions, commercial production, and on-air image quality control. He was the director of marketing and promotions at KMEX in L.A. and creative services for Univision, serving as executive producer for Network shows “El Grito de Mexico” and “El Desfile de las Roasas.” De La Parra is an alumnus of Columbia College Chicago and received his BA in Film & Video: Producing and also attended UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Susan V. Downing (P '99)

Susan Downing is a lifelong activist and philanthropist promoting culture and the arts in Chicago. She has been responsible for coordinating and developing numerous successful fund raising events around the city.

Downing was a former president of the Women's Board of the Alder Planetarium. She is a member of the Board of Gold Coast Neighbors and the Sarah Siddons Society and is engaged with the Junior League of Chicago.

Sincere devotion to Columbia College is aligned with her son, Benjamin ('99), a Columbia College alumnus. Since her son's graduation, Susan has been a continuous donor to the President's Club. In 2005 Downing was appointed to co-chair the Parent's Fund and to serve on the Institutional Advancement and Education Committees. She was also successful in securing a scholarship for theater students at Columbia College Chicago from the Sarah Siddons Society.

Jeremy Daniel Efroymson (MFA '98)

Jeremy Efryomson is an artist, philanthropist, arts activist and advocate for small grassroots organizations. As Vice Chair of the Efroymson Family Fund, Jeremy has been instrumental in advising and supporting organizations that contribute to the arts, cultural, vibrancy and enrichment of the city of Indianapolis, the state of Indiana and beyond. 

Efroymson is particularly passionate about supporting creative ideas, innovation and artistic talent. This passion is evidenced by his historical commitment as founder of the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art (iMOCA) and the vision behind the Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowships, an annual awards program where he provides (5) $25,000 to contemporary visual artists in the Midwest.

Efroymson is engaged as a volunteer and his interests range from urban farming, the environment, and historic preservation to international sustainability projects, recycling, and cryptozoology. He is the president of the Indianapolis Progressive Rotary Club and serves as a board member or in an advisory capacity to the Big Car Artist Cooperative, the School of Physical Education and Tourism, Convention, and Event Management at IUPUI, the Immigrant Welcome Center, and Historic New Harmony. He currently serves as President of the Board of the Namaste Center in La Porte Indiana, an alternative medicine center.

Efroymson has a degree in film and video from the University of Michigan, a J.D. from Indiana University- Bloomington, an M.B.A. from Butler University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Columbia College Chicago. 

Jane Gately

Jane Gately is an ex-partner from Ernst and Young and has over 30 years experience in technology leadership and management, as well as wider corporate operations with the professional services industry, including Andersen Consulting. Being based in London, she covered the UK and European market, with additional experience working with the Middle East, India, South Africa, Buenos Aires and the US. Gately’s expertise is in driving cross-functional strategies, service and cost efficiencies, renumeration strategies and internal corporate culture and has been a featured speaker at UK conferences, Ernst and Young global committees and think tank environments. Gately currently provides pro-bono strategy work and serves as the vice chairman of the admissions committee for the University Club of Chicago. Gately has a BS in Corporate Finance from Syracuse University.

John R. Gehron (P '95, P '09)

John Gehron is currently a broadcast consultant, and COO of, an internet radio company based in Chicago.

Prior to consulting, Gehron was General Manager of Harpo Radio which developed "Oprah and Friends" a channel on XM satellite radio. His other experience includes Regional VP and Market Manager for Clear Channel Chicago's 7 radio stations(WGCI-FM, WVAZ-FM, WLIT-FM, WNUA-FM, WKSC-FM, WGRB-AM and WRLL-AM), as well as the Clear Channel stations in the Milwaukee, Madison and Eau Claire, Wisconsin markets. Gehron was the senior vice president of programming for CBS/Infinity Broadcasting, and before that served as Co- Chief Operating Officer at American Radio Systems. In 2001, Gehron was honored at the Radio and Records Annual Convention as the Group Executive of the Year.

Gehron began his broadcast career in 1970 as program director at CBS's WCAU-FM (now WOGL-FM) in Philadelphia. His Chicago background stretches back to 1974 when he was the program director and general manager at WLS-AM. Gehron created the national standard for the "smooth jazz" format and became a major factor in the nation's third largest radio market.

Devin A. Gross

Devin Gross is the Chief Executive Office and Board Member of Emmi Solutions, a healthcare technology company based in Chicago. Prior to joining Emmi Solutions in 2003, Gross was the Director of Health Plan Practice at First Consulting Group. Additionally, he has worked as a Hospital Administrator at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Gross holds a Bachelor's degree from Lehigh University and an MBA in Healthcare Administration from Temple University. He is active in the Louis Nettelhorst School, a CPS Magnet School and one first CPS Community Schools and also serves on the board of the Camp Shohola Scholarship Fund.

Joan Hammel (BA '86, ex officio)

Joan Hammel is a professional entertainer performing live as well as appearing in commercials, on television, in films, and on radio. She has been nominated five times for Entertainer of the Year by the Chicago Music Awards and is a multi-year winner of the ASCAPLUS Writer's Award and the YMCA of Lake County Women of Achievement Award winner in the Arts category. The Robert M. MacNamara Foundation awarded her one of its residencies, the only one ever awarded to a singer/songwriter.

Hammel's CD entitled joanland was on the Grammy Award Nominations Ballot, and she was the vocalist on the recording of Oh Lady Di for the late Princess of Wales benefiting her Foundation and charities. The song America, recorded after 9-11, is a part of New York's National 911 Memorial Artist Registry and was chosen for the first Flight 93 National Memorial website in California and also led to Hammel being chosen by Washington for a nine-day USO tour to entertain the troops. Other performance highlights include the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and working all around the globe in places like the Caribbean and Las Vegas. She has shared billing with entertainers like Buddy Rich, Koko Taylor, Lonnie Brooks, the Chi-Lites, the Cryan' Shames, Shirley King, Johnny Frigo, Frank Mantooth, Rare Earth, James Moody and the Second City Comedy Troupe. She has sung at Holy Name Cathedral many times and performed a concert as a part of acclaimed cellist Yo Yo Ma's yearlong Silk Road project in Chicago.

The film Last Day in Chicago, in which Hammel had a starring role, won its division of the Chicago International Film Festival. It's Fun to be Fit!, a television program she worked on at CBS-TV Chicago, won an Emmy for Best Children's Program. Hammel hosted and produced The Midday Show at ABC Radio affiliate WKRS, winning the Lake Country Women's Coalition's Woman in Communications Award and the Illinois' Public Health Association Media Award. She also hosted a show for Wauk Town Radio averaging over a million hits per month. Hammel has done shows with James Brown, Steve Allen, Richard Marx, Alan Thicke, Bart Starr, Jim Otto, Astronaut Jim Lovell, chef Jacques Pepin, Elektra Records founder Jack Holzman, Jennifer O'Neil, Livingston Taylor, Robert Guillaume, Oak Ridge Boy Joe Bonsall, Statler Brothers' Don Reid, Dick Van Patten, Janis Joplin guitarist Sam Andrew, and Hemingway's travel companion, A.E. Hotchner, among others.

Hammel served on the Board of Governors in Chicago for the GRAMMY Awards for about a dozen years, and was a part of the first female President/Vice President team in Academy history. She served for over ten years as Trustee and then President for Lake County Discovery Museum Board. She is the current President of the Columbia College Alumni Association.

John McClain Holmes

John Holmes is the Group Vice President, Aviation Supply Chain with AAR Corp, a publicly held commercial and defense services company. Mr. Holmes leads the company's supply chain group of businesses,which offers inventory and repair management to commercial and defense customers through its offices and facilities in over 20 countries.

Prior to joining AAR, Holmes worked in the Corporate Finance Group of William Blair and Company. Following William Blair he joined Bank of America Capital Investors. Holmes joined AAR in 2001 as Director of Mergers and Acquisitions. He became General Manager of AAR Allen Aircraft in 2003 and took on increasing levels of responsibility for other commercial businesses over the next several years. In 2012, Mr. Holmes assumed additional responsibility for the Company's Defense Systems and Logistics business and was appointed Group Vice President, Aviation Supply Chain.

Holmes grew up primarily in Georgia and Connecticut. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from the University of Illinois and an MBA from the University of Chicago. He serves on the Board of Directors for Alliance Francaise, the National Board of the Commanderie de Bordeaux and is also a member of the Chevaliers du Tastevin, the Wings Club, the Executives Club of Chicago, and was recently named by Aviation Week Magazine as one of the 40 Under Forty Rising Stars of Aeronautics and Aviation. Holmes is an active supporter of the Anti-Cruelty Society and World Wildlife Fund.

Kwang-Wu Kim, President and CEO (ex officio)

Kwang-Wu KimKwang-Wu Kim, D.M.A., is president and chief executive officer of Columbia College Chicago. He is the 10th president in the 123-year history of Columbia College. Appointed by a unanimous vote of the Board of Trustees and the Presidential Selection Advisory Panel, President Kim has served in this role since July 1st, 2013.

A native Chicagoan, President Kim is an outspoken advocate for the arts and a proponent of expanding the role of creative practice in society and he is deeply committed to preparing students to be creative agents in society.

With more than 30 years of experience in performance, teaching and administration, President Kim was most recently dean and director of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University, which comprises the schools of Art; Arts, Media and Engineering; Dance; Design; Music; and Theatre and Film, as well as the ASU Art Museum. As dean and director, he led a faculty and staff of 500, serving over 5,000 students, and held a tenured professorship in the School of Music. While at Arizona State University, he led the development and creation of a new cross disciplinary B.A. in Digital Culture also securing $20 Million in private support to fund the initiative.

Prior to his work at Arizona State University, President Kim served as president of the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and as artistic and administrative director of El Paso Pro-Musica and co-founder of the El Paso Chamber Music Festival in El Paso, Texas. In addition to his professorship at Arizona State University, President Kim has held teaching positions at the Longy School of Music, the University of Texas at El Paso, the Peabody Institute, and Dickinson College.

Dr. Kim has been a guest speaker at Boston University and at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education and has served as guest faculty member at the St. Lawrence String Quartet Chamber Music Seminar at Stanford University, the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music, the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, and at the Banff Centre for the Arts. He has presented as an invited panelist for the National Association of Schools of Music, as well as serving as a juror at the New England Conservatory, the Boston Conservatory, and the Boston Arts Academy.

President Kim holds a doctorate of musical arts and an artist diploma from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, where he studied with legendary pianist and conductor Leon Fleisher and served as Fleisher's teaching associate. He received his bachelor's degree in philosophy, magna cum laude, from Yale University.

As a pianist, President Kim made his solo debuts at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art and Washington D.C.'s Phillips Collection, his orchestral debut with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Lukas Foss, and was presented at the Marlboro Festival by then artistic director, Rudolf Serkin.

In addition to his presidential role, Dr. Kim serves as a faculty member in the Columbia College Chicago Music Department.

Jay Leib (BA '95)

Jay Leib is the CEO of NexLP, Inc. NexLP is a Chicago-based software company focused on using machine learning technology to assist corporations with their eDiscovery, Fraud and Compliance challenges.

Leib has successfully founded and led software start-ups throughout his career. Prior to founding NexLP, he was the chief strategy officer at Chicago-based kCura Corporation, a Chicago based software focused on eDiscovery and Big Data. He has more than a decade of experience in the technology field and has worked in multiple roles on some of the largest e-discovery and fraud investigation projects in the world. Before joining kCura, Leib was an executive at Ernst & Young's Fraud Investigative & Dispute Services practice. He was also the co-founder of Advocate Solutions Inc., where he invented Discovery Cracker-the world's first shrink-wrapped e-discovery processing application. Advocate Solution had a successful exit event when it was acquired by DocuLex, Inc.

Averill Leviton

Averill Leviton is currently on the board of directors for Hostelling International Chicago and Chicago Opera Theater. She is a member of Sister Cities Paris, the Auxiliary Board of the Chicago Academy of the Arts, the Gene Siskel Film Center of the Art Institute of Chicago (Vice President and Membership Chairman), Hubbard Street Dance Company, the President's Council Advisory Board of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Opera Guild (Patron), Lyric Opera of Chicago (Guarantor), and International Women's Association.

Fred C. Lowinger

Frederick C. Lowinger is Senior Counsel in the Chicago office of the global law firm of Sidley Austin LLP. He previously served as co-head of the firm's M&A practice area, head of the Chicago office's Corporate Group and a member of the firm's Executive Committee. His practice focuses principally on mergers and acquisitions and corporate governance.

Lowinger received a JD in 1980 from The University of Chicago Law School (cum laude) and a BS and MS in 1977 from the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton School). He served as a clerk for Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. of the US Supreme Court and as a clerk on the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit. Lowinger is a certified public accountant.

Lowinger is a member of the ABA Corporate Laws Committee, the Planning Committee of the Tulane Corporate Law Institute, and the Executive Committee of Northwestern University's Garrett Corporate and Securities Law Institute. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago Foundation.

Howard Mendelsohn ('49)

Howard Mendelsohn is president of Howard Mendelsohn & Company, a Chicago public relations consulting firm. After attending the University of Illinois where he studied business administration, he graduated from Columbia College with a bachelor's degree in speech.

Mendelsohn began his career as an announcer and disc jockey for KAAA, a radio station in Red Wing, Minnesota. He then became the play-by-play announcer for radio, television, and public address for National Roller Derby, also serving as publicist and moving from various major cities to New York City. There he announced three games a week on the ABC Television Network and acted as national publicity director for the Roller Derby. After returning to Chicago, he became an account executive at Herbert M. Kraus Public Relations and subsequently directed public relations for CBS, WBBM-TV, Channel 2, Chicago.

Mendelsohn started his company in 1957 and represented trade shows, retail stores, Entertainers, concerts, clubs, women's fashion designers, and the Chicago Bears for their advertising for 10 years. He was a Chicago publicist for numerous major companies including Seagram Distillers Company, Lawry's Foods, Hunt's Foods, Consolidated Cigar, Ford Motor Company, Universal Pictures, Merrill Chase Galleries, and Harper's Bazaar Magazine. He was the publicist for a variety of theatrical productions including Golden Boy, Hair, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown!, and Stop the World. He was also the publicist for Melody Top Theatre for six years. Restaurant clients have included Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, Ditka's, International House of Pancakes, That Steak Joynt, P.J. Clarke's, Gaslight Clubs, and Corona Cafe, among others.

Mendelsohn handled public relations for entertainers including Lucille Ball, Tony Bennett, Jack Benny, Vic Damone, Sammy Davis, Jr., George Gobel, Marlene Dietrich, Phyllis Diller, Merv Griffin, Ted Lewis, Erroll Garner, and Fats Domino. His fundraising credits list the Variety Club of Illinois, Little City Foundation, and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Mendelsohn was also producer/publicist of five Chicago Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethons and the first Chicago Variety Club Telethon.

Arlen D. Rubin

Arlen Rubin is the retired Chief Financial Officer of Live Marketing, Inc., a full service Trade Show and Events Marketing agency, founded by his wife Elaine Cohen Rubin in 1973.

Rubin graduated from the University of Illinois - Champaign-Urbana with a B.S. in Accountancy and became a C.P.A. in 1967.

Rubin started his career in 1966 as a staff accountant with Seidman & Seidman (now BDO Seidman) and in 1970 changed positions to the accounting firm Alexander Grant & Company (now Grant Thornton). He remained at Alexander Grant, where he was an audit manager until 1976. Rubin became a member of The Chicago Board of Trade in 1983 and remained there until 2002. From 1966 until 1972 Mr. Rubin served in U.S. Army Reserve and received an honorable discharge.

From 1986 until 1997 Rubin was a member of the board of the Institute for Clinical Social Work, a freestanding program offering a PH.D in Clinical Social Work.

Asha L. I. Spencer

Asha Spencer is an associate at Bartlit Beck Herman Palenchar & Scott LLP. She is a recent graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, where she was an active participant in the law school community. Spencer served as an Academic Counselor, was a member of The Law Review, and provided legal representation to indigent criminal defendants through the Mandel Legal Aid Clinic. During her time in law school Spencer worked for the Department of Justice in Washington D.C., for Skadden Arps in New York, and for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Vienna, Austria.

Spencer worked for the Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, and as a senior legislative and appropriations analyst,she oversaw budgets totaling $8 billion and served as the chief staffer for four standing House committees. Spencer also spent one year as a project manager for an HIV prevention initiative in Nairobi, Kenya.

Raised in Chicago, Asha attended both elementary and high school in the city, and has worked at a number of different community development organizations in Chicago, including the Organization of the Northeast (ONE), Woodlawn East Communities and Neighbors (WECAN), and the Institute of Cultural Affairs.

Spencer earned her Bachelor of Arts with honors from Carleton College and JD from the University of Chicago Law School.

Arthur M. Sussman

Arthur Sussman served as Vice President of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation from 2001 to 2010. In this senior management position, Sussman facilitated the work of the Foundation's Board of Directors, represented the Foundation in a range of settings and partnerships, and directed the foundation's arts and culture grant making in Chicago.

Prior to joining the Foundation in 2001, Sussman had been the chief legal officer for the University of Chicago since 1979. In that position he managed the university's government relations program and advised the university president on issues of governance, organization, research, and technology transfer. Sussman was responsible for programs at the University of Chicago designed to improve the quality of student life as well as operations of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. He was responsible for development and administration of university policies regarding labor, personnel, and benefits, and for oversight of the Argonne National Laboratory, a federal energy research facility with 4000 employees.

Earlier in his career (1977-79) he was University Legal Counsel for Southern Illinois University, and for seven years (1970-77) was an associate and partner at the Chicago law firm of Jenner & Block. During three years as a Captain in the U.S. Army, Sussman served as a special assistant in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army, where he was responsible for programs on race relations and social action.

Sussman is a member of the Board of Directors of Chapin Hall Center for Children, and Chair of the Illinois Humanities Council. He has written a number of articles and is a frequent speaker on topics relating to higher education. He earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and is a graduate of Harvard Law School.

Andreas Waldburg-Wolfegg

Andreas Waldburg-Wolfegg is a portfolio manager and an international analyst at Columbia Wanger Asset Management, LLC. Waldburg- Wolfegg joined Columbia Wanger in 2002 and covers foreign equities in France, Italy, Greece, Morocco, Latin America, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom. He has been a member of the investment community since 1993.

Prior to joining Columbia Wanger, Waldburg-Wolfegg served as the European coordinator for Scudder Investments' research portfolio that included the firm's best international stock ideas. He was based in the United Kingdom and then New York City. A German national, Waldburg-Wolfegg also worked for Kleinwort Benson Securities in London as a financial analyst and for Zurich Investment Management in London.

Waldburg-Wolfegg earned a master's degree from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He is fluent in German, English, French and Spanish, and speaks basic Italian.

Sona Wang

Sona Wang possesses over 20 years of venture investment experience. Since 1987, she has co-founded and managed three Illinois-based venture capital funds. Previously, she was an investment manager with Allstate Venture Capital, one of the oldest institutional venture funds with over $500 million invested. Her investment focus has been in information technology, business services, and healthcare. She serves on numerous corporate boards including Chairman of TrafficCast International, Inc., Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois and Northshore University Healthsystems. Prior to her career in venture capital, Wang was employed with Intel Corporation in key management positions in engineering, manufacturing and marketing.

Wang currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Northwestern University where she is the Chairman of the Advisory Board to the Innovations and New Ventures Office. She also serves on Governor Quinn's Economic Recovery Commission as a committee chairman. Other civic boards include trustee of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Mayor's Council of Technology Advisors.

Wang was the recipient of the YWCA Leadership Award for Entrepreneurship in 2001. She was recognized in 2004 and in 2008 as one of the "100 Most Influential Women in Chicago" by Crains Business Chicago, as Business Leader of Color by Chicago United, and identified as among Corporate Directors to Watch by Directors & Boards Magazine, 2008.

Wang graduated from Stanford University with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and received an M.B.A., magna cum laude, from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

Allison Grant Williams

Allison Grant Williams serves as Chief Administrative Officer and Director of Marketing of Northern Trust's Exchange Traded Funds Group. She is responsible for overall business administration for the ETF Group, including financial planning and budgeting, senior management reporting, human resource processes, technology project management, as well as ETF marketing planning and execution. As a career institutional investment management professional, Williams is a member of the senior management team responsible for the growth and profitability of Northern Trust's FlexShares ETF business unit.

Prior to joining Northern Trust in January 2011, Wllliams was President of Grant Partners, a business strategy and organizational development firm which provided consulting services to investment advisory and private equity firms, including strategic planning, marketing communications and business development. Previously she served as Executive Vice President for Holland Capital Management, a U.S. equity and fixed income institutional asset management firm, and Executive Vice President of Capri Capital Advisors, a real estate investment firm. From 1987 to 2001 Williams was a Director and Partner with UBS Asset Management/Brinson Partners, Inc., a global investment management firm where she was responsible for institutional client relationships, and held national business development as well as consultant management responsibilities. She also held positions with Goldman, Sachs & Co. as a sales associate covering exchange traded financial futures and options (New York and Chicago), and The First National Bank of Chicago as a commercial lending relationship manager.

Williams is a native Chicagoan, and attended Chicago Public Schools as a youngster. Both she and her husband, Darrell A. Williams, have dedicated their volunteer and charitable work to educational organizations. Williams holds an A.B. in English Literature from Dartmouth College and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Hyde Park Development Corporation, Harvard Business School Club of Chicago as well as the HBSCC Charitable Fund.

Hugh C. Williams

Hugh C. Williams is the founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of Continental Painting and Decorating, Inc., a major Chicago-based painting contractor established in 1994.

Prior to Continental Painting,  Williams was a limited partner with LaSalle Partners (now Jones Lang LaSalle), a corporate real estate services firm. His experiences also include project management at Wright Runstad & Co., a real estate development firm.

He is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago and a former member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Williams holds a Master of Business Administration from Stanford University Graduate School of Business and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Howard University.

Robert A. Wislow

Robert Wislow is the Chairman of CBRE Chicago. Over the past thirty-three years, Wislow, Nancy Packer, and Camille Julmy have shaped U.S. Equities Realty into one of Chicago's leading real estate firms providing a full range of services to property owners, government entities, lenders, and tenants. The company has grown to include offices in Chicago; Detroit; Philadelphia; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Santiago, Chile. As Chairman and CEO, Bob spearheaded U.S. Equities's ongoing expansion and oversees strategic planning for continued growth. He has participated in real estate transactions valued at more than $4.0 billion, including more than five million square feet of office leases, and has overseen more than eight million square feet of developments during his thirty-nine year career.

In addition to his business interests, Wislow is a community and civic leader. He was the first real estate entrepreneur to serve as the chairman of the 102 year-old Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, term ending in June 2007, where he previously chaired the Chamber's Economic Development Committee. As chairman of the Chicago Development Council, Wislow helped repeal the 1987 lease tax on office tenants that would have been extremely disruptive to the industry. Mayor Richard M. Daley appointed him to serve on the Civic Consulting Alliance and the Board of Metra. He is the immediate past chairman of the Board of Trustees for North Central College in Naperville and was director and vice president of the Arts Club of Chicago. He is the current chair of the Chicago Public Library Foundation, serves as the vice-chairman of the Board of Overseers for Rush University Medical Center, and is on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association Board of Trustees.

Wislow was the honored recipient of the 2006 ULI Chicago Lifetime Achievement Award.

William Wolf

William Wolf is one of the founding principals of BW Capital Partners, a Chicago-based hedgefund and private equity platform. Prior to founding BW Capital Partners in November 2011, Wolf was a principal at Talon Asset Management, LLC. During his 12-year tenure at Talon, Wolf had varied responsibilities, including oversight of Talon's Private Equity investments, serving as Director of Research and serving on Talon's Board of Managers.

Wolf began his career in 1982 as an investment banker at Salomon Brothers Inc. In 1987, he joined the investment banking group of William Blair & Company where he worked for two years. In 1990 Wolf joined Henry Crown and Company to oversee a portfolio of privately owned businesses.

Wolf currently serves on the Board of Directors of AnswersMedia LLC, Lava Lite, LLC, Mindcrest, Inc., PlayNetwork, Inc., and Well Right, LLC.
