Q: What changes should I expect this year with the new Office of Academic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion?
The new Office of Academic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) will largely be focused on various workshop trainings for faculty and staff and hiring new faculty to expand curriculum this year (see welcome message). We will also be doing public programming, so check back on details about that. Finally, we have created a resources page for those interested in DEI-related topics and scholarship.
Q: How does Columbia support its diverse student population?
We support students in myriad ways. The Dean of Academic DEI is largely in charge of academic, curricular, and faculty-based issues, which ultimately work to support students’ classroom experiences. Student Diversity and Inclusion, formerly known as Multicultural Affairs, is a place for students to receive direct student services, join student groups, and engage in various programming. Their office is located at 618 S. Michigan Ave, Suite 400.
Q: Who should I speak to regarding an issue in my classroom or workplace?
Depending on the issue, you may have various options.
- If you have an issue with a faculty member and you cannot speak to them directly, you can speak to the department chair of the respective department.
- If you feel the issue is based in diversity issues related to course content of faculty/student interactions, please contact the Dean of Academic DEI or the Dean of Students.
- If you are a staff member and have a workplace issue, please contact Human Resources.
- If your issue requires immediate attention, please contact Campus Safety and Security.
Q: How can I sign up for the Undoing Racism workshops this year?
If you are eligible for the Undoing Racism workshop this year you will have received a detailed email with information. If you did not receive the email and believe you should have, please contact the Office of Academic DEI.
