Citation Guidelines for AI Software
Faculty should inform students of the Citation Challenges for AI generative software. For right now, please consider making sure students understand:
- Information presented in the output of an AI is not a primary source of information. It should always be fact checked against other sources.
- Citing the use of an AI text generator is not the same as citing the source of a piece of information.
- They should cite ALL content taken from an AI to avoid academic misconduct.
- In support of faculty and students, the Columbia College Chicago Library provides Citation Guidelines (constantly being updated).
- AI is not an author, according to Cambridge University Press
- Citation guidelines are evolving and provisionary.
- APA Style Manual, 7th Edition and Citing Generative AI Resources.
