New Faculty Orientation

New Faculty Orientation (NFO) is an introduction to the mission, culture, programs, resources, and community of teaching and learning at Columbia College Chicago. New Faculty Orientation is comprised of an online (asynchronous) and in-person (synchronous) component. Faculty are enrolled in New Faculty Orientation in Canvas once they have received their college credentials. All faculty receive training in our learning management system (LMS) Canvas. Full-time faculty are also introduced to tenure processes and evaluation software and are placed into a Mutual Mentoring group during their first year.

In addition to the sessions below, we've compiled a list of New Faculty FAQs that you may find useful as a new employee of the college.

New Faculty Orientation in Canvas – online course

This asynchronous, accessible, self-guided online course introduces faculty to the responsibilities of being an instructor at the college and to the many resources available to support students and faculty. Faculty are enrolled in New Faculty Orientation on a rolling basis once they receive their credentials. We estimate that it will take between 3-4 hours to complete the course, and we encourage faculty to do so prior to the in-person component of New Faculty Orientation scheduled at the end of August or in mid-January each academic year.

New Faculty Orientation:
Friday August 18, Morning: Full-Time (online, synchronous)
Friday August 18, Afternoon: Canvas Trainings for All (online, synchronous)
Friday August 25, Morning: Full- and Part-Time (in person, on campus)

New Faculty Orientation events include individuals from Information Technology, Human Resources, Academic Personnel, and other units from around the college to help facilitate onboarding processes and introduce folks to the college. Activities for the day may include focusing on DEI pedagogy, creating welcoming spaces for LGBTQIA+ students, transforming classrooms for greater equity and access for all students, exploring grading philosophies, and networking with one another.
