Submitting a Student Success Alert
Student Success Alerts (formerly EASE) allow faculty and staff to submit notifications when they are concerned about a student. Alerts are key to providing early intervention and customized support to our students. If a student needs help with an issue that is not an emergency or a report of sexual misconduct, please submit an alert.
HOW TO SUBMIT AN ALERT (VISUAL GUIDE)
Reasons to submit an alert include but are not limited to:
- Student has accumulated several class absences
- Student shared that they are having personal/emotional concerns and you believe they could benefit from assistance
- Student has fallen behind on class assignments or needs a direct referral to tutoring
Alerts are received by Student Persistence, who will either follow up with the student directly to provide support, or assign the alert to the appropriate support office. When alerts are submitted under the “concern about student’s health/behavior” reason, they are automatically routed to Student Relations.
To submit an alert, log into MyColumbia and you will see a “Student Success” tab at the top of the page. You will be prompted to use your Single-Sign-On (SSO) credentials to access the platform. This is the same system we use to collect Mandatory Attendance Reports (MAR) and Academic Progress Reports (APRs). By collecting alerts in the SSC Navigate system, we have a better perspective on the entire student experience and how we can provide appropriate assistance. For more information or questions about submitting alerts, please contact studentpersistence@colum.edu.
FAQs- What if I have difficulty submitting an alert?
Faculty and staff who need assistance with filing an alert may contact Student Persistence at studentpersistence@colum.edu. Student Persistence manages the SSC Navigate notification system. - How long does it take for Student Persistence to respond to an alert?
Student Persistence will typically respond to an alert by the following business day.
- How do I know that my alert has been reviewed?
Student Persistence will email you to confirm receipt of the alert. Outreach will always be attempted if an alert is submitted unless otherwise requested. In some cases, a student support office will call you for more information. Due to confidentiality laws, for health/behavior alerts, Student Relations cannot provide any follow-up information to faculty and staff without the student’s express written consent.
- Can my health/behavior alert remain anonymous?
Your name will be attached to the alert, so Student Relations will be aware of your identity. Student Relations can protect your identity from the student, although anonymity is typically discouraged. Student Relations can best support the student when information is openly shared. Students often express appreciation for the faculty or staff member that cares enough to submit an alert. In addition, if the student trusts you, then the student will also trust your referral, facilitating greater openness to support from Student Relations. Student Relations has discretion to decline a request of anonymity in matters that may present a health and safety risk to a student or the greater campus community.
