Academic Technology

Academic Technology, a team within Information Technology, furthers the department's mission by supporting technologies that contribute to successful teaching and learning environments, the Canvas learning management system (LMS), classrooms, and student resource spaces. Academic Technology utilizes a collaborative approach that intends to foster positive relationships with administration and faculty to best support student learning.

Technology Trainings and Workshops

Academic Technology offers in person training presentations on campus. Trainings cover a variety of topics essential to learning the many features of Canvas, Office 365, and Qualtrics, among many additional applications.

Canvas Course Review and Consultations
Instructional Designers are available to consult on course review. To request a course review consultation, please submit a Team Dynamix ticket or email Academic Technology at canvaslms@colum.edu.

Smart Classroom Support
IT Media Services provides support to 130+ smart classrooms on campus. Smart classrooms and lecture halls are spaces that can be booked through the Event Management System (EMS) that host classes, lectures, and special events.  

Our smart classrooms come standard with: 

• An in-room screen
• Projector
• In room sound system
• Connections to external devices
• A dual-boot computer with a DVD player

Media Services is open during the semester Monday through Thursday between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., as well as Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

During the summer, Media Services is open Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.  

Canvas

Canvas is the LMS used by Columbia faculty to manage their courses and it allows students to access course materials, such as course syllabi, assignments, resources, grades, and other materials. The college’s Canvas website is located at canvas.colum.edu.

Access Canvas
Instructors must use their network ID and password to sign-in to Canvas at canvas.colum.edu, which is the same username and password that is used to access campus email, commonly the first letter of one’s first name and full last name (for example, Joi Columbia may have a username of jcolumbia@colum.edu and the corresponding network password).

Digital Tools Available

Other digital tools currently available in Canvas include Auralia & Musition, Big Blue Button, Cengage Learning MindLinks, GoReact, Khan Academy, LibGuides, McGraw Hill Connect, Microsoft Office 365, NoteFlight, Panopto, Pearson MyLab & Mastering, Pearson Revel, Qwickly Attendance, Vimeo, YouTube, and Zoom.
