A Message from President Kim About the Supreme Court Ruling to Uphold Federal Immigration Ban

July 3, 2018

Dear faculty, students, and staff:

On June 26, 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling to uphold the latest version of the federal Executive Order that bans immigrants and refugees from several countries from entering the U.S., (“travel ban”). The ban restricts entry of nationals from Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Somalia, Venezuela, and Yemen. Specifics on the “travel ban” are available here.

Provisions of the “travel ban” have been enforced since December 8, 2017 but have met with numerous legal challenges. The Court’s decision upholding the ban now authorizes the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to enforce all of the ban’s provisions. As such, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials can either delay or bar re-entry of immigrants to the U.S.

As Columbia attracts talented students, faculty, and staff from all over the world, this ruling may affect our community, and may cause uncertainty, concern, and disruption for many.

The college remains committed to fostering a welcoming and tolerant community, and stands ready to ensure that our international student and faculty populations have the support and resources they need. Students, faculty, and staff members from the countries listed on the “travel ban” should carefully plan and consult with the college and other resources on immigration and visa matters before departing from the U.S.

Please note the following guidance:
  • Whenever traveling within the U.S., be sure to carry any immigration documents which prove your legal status.
  • Non-U.S. citizens and their families from the affected countries should consult with a trusted immigration advisor before traveling outside the U.S.
  • The Supreme Court ruling does allow for the issuance of student visas (F and M) and exchange visitor visas (J) to individuals from some countries.
