IX. Evaluation of Faculty Members with Teaching-Track Appointments

Note: Please review Section II. General Principles before reading the following procedures.

A. General Policy

1. Objectives. The process to evaluate a faculty member holding a Teaching-Track Appointment is designed to be candid, constructive, and based on supporting evidence that provides clear indication of the faculty member’s performance in relation to the standards set forth in Section V. of this Statement and the criteria established by the individual Departments.

2. Frequency.

a. Assistant Professors of Instruction are evaluated annually following the first year of their appointment (Teaching-Track Annual Evaluation) with an expanded evaluation every third year (Teaching-Track Triennial Evaluation).

b. Associate Professors of Instruction and Professors of Instruction are evaluated following the third year of their appointment and every third year thereafter (Teaching-Track Triennial Evaluation).

3. Supporting Evidence. All faculty members with Teaching-Track Appointments must submit a Faculty Annual Activity Report (FAAR), which requires that the faculty member itemize and describe all activities from the past academic year in teaching and teaching-related activity; and service to the College, profession, and community (the standards set forth in Section V.). The faculty member may attach items to the FAAR such as classroom observations, samples of student work, or course materials. Student course evaluation reports are attached by the Academic Personnel Office. The faculty member will Deliver a completed FAAR not later than May 31 every year.

B. Teaching-Track Annual Evaluation

1. Teaching-Track Annual Evaluation. Assistant Professors of Instruction are evaluated annually by the Department Chair and School Dean.

2. Department Process. The Department Chair will review the supporting evidence and submit a narrative evaluation that will be Delivered to the faculty member not later than the second Monday in July. The faculty member may submit a narrative response to the Department Chair’s evaluation not later than the fourth Monday in July. If submitted, a copy of the faculty member’s response will be Delivered to the Department Chair.

3. School Process. The School Dean will review the supporting evidence, the Department Chair’s evaluation, and the faculty member’s response, if any, and will submit a narrative evaluation that will be Delivered to the faculty member, with a copy to the Department Chair, not later than the fourth Monday in August.

C. Teaching-Track Triennial Evaluation

1. Teaching-Track Triennial Evaluation. Assistant Professors of Instruction, Associate Professors of Instruction, and Professors of Instruction will undergo a Teaching-Track Triennial Evaluation following the third year of their appointment to that rank and every third year thereafter.

2. Additional Supporting Evidence. In addition to the annually submitted supporting evidence, the faculty member will submit at least one classroom observation report completed during the previous three-year period, a current curriculum vitae, and a “Three-Year Activity Statement,” a narrative self-assessment informed by, but not limited to, the information in the faculty member’s three most recent FAARs. The Three-Year Activity Statement will be no longer than three pages in length. The additional supporting materials will be submitted with the evaluation not later than May 31.

3. Department Process. The triennial evaluation will include a review of the faculty member’s performance over the previous three academic years. Additionally, the Department Chair will identify areas for growth with the intent to support the faculty member in pursuing professional opportunities, such as promotion. The Department Chair will review the supporting evidence and submit a narrative evaluation that will be Delivered to the faculty member not later than the second Monday in July. The faculty member may submit a narrative response to the Department Chair's evaluation not later than the fourth Monday in July. If submitted, a copy of the faculty member’s response will be Delivered to the Department Chair.

4. School Process. The School Dean will review the supporting evidence, the Department Chair’s evaluation, and the faculty member’s response, if any, and submit a narrative evaluation that will be Delivered to the faculty member, with a copy to the Department Chair, not later than the fourth Monday in August.
