Student Engagement
There are various ways that Columbia students can get involved in issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Student Advisory Board
The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Student Advisory Board (DEI-SAB) is a peer-led student board founded in 2016. Its goal is to receive and disseminate the student experience regarding issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Appointed by and reporting directly to President Kwang-Wu Kim, the board seeks to ensure that a wide range of student voices are heard, shared, and expressed to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion both inside and outside of the classroom.
Student Diversity and Inclusion Office
SDI will serve as a valuable resource to students by continuing to foster and support the intellectual, social, and cultural development of all students through three areas of focus:
-
Support for Academic Success: SDI staff will develop ways that encourage students to utilize the academic support services on campus, and also create a mentorship program consisting of faculty, staff, and students in their third and fourth years of study.
- Cultural Celebrations: Cultural celebrations offered throughout the year will have a focus on themes that are germane to the curriculum, such as film, photography, and music.
- Workshops and Seminars: Educational programs will explore relevant topics of diversity and inclusion that students and the country are grappling with.
SDI will continue to be home to all Latinx, African American, Asian American, LGBTQIA, and religious student organizations, and this year, they welcome student veterans as well. Their resources and spaces include a lounge, conference room, Multipurpose Studio, graffiti wall, Reading and Resource Room, Meeting and Meditation Room, and a Student Lab. The SDI office is located on the 4th floor of 618 S. Michigan Ave. For more information, contact Associate Dean of Student Life Kari L. Sommers at klsommers@colum.edu.
