Suzanne McBride is dean of the School of Graduate Studies and professor of Journalism in the Communication Department. She has served Columbia College Chicago in various roles since 2005, most recently as chair of the Communication Department.

An expert on community news and investigative reporting, McBride has lectured in Asia, Canada, Europe and the United States. In 2012, she was a Fulbright Scholar in Ireland, where she taught at the Dublin Institute of Technology, and in 2009 served as a speaker specialist for the U.S. Department of State in Thailand. McBride is founding editor and publisher of AustinTalks.org, a local news web site that covers Chicago’s West Side, and she is an editor at the Chicago Sun-Times.

McBride co-founded the local news web site ChicagoTalks, which features the work of Columbia students and has been honored by Investigative Reporters & Editors, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors. Her students have covered the Iowa caucuses and presidential primaries; former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s federal corruption trial; and the 2008 vice presidential debate in St. Louis; they have also traveled to Ireland for an immersive, two-week course she developed for Columbia’s J-term.

Before joining Columbia’s faculty, McBride was an assistant managing editor at The Indianapolis Star, where she also served as city editor, Statehouse bureau chief and an investigative reporter. She has worked as a manager for WTHR-13, the NBC affiliate in Indianapolis; an editor for the Terre Haute Tribune-Star; a business reporter for The Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne; and a legislative aide for U.S. Rep. Tony P. Hall in Washington, D.C.

A Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude graduate of the University of Iowa, McBride holds a BA in Journalism and Psychology. She earned a MSJ in journalism with honors from Northwestern University.
